VIFF will screen 61 films directed by women at Hallwalls in Buffalo this August.
Buffalo, New York – The fourth edition of Valkyrie International Film
Festival, showcasing films directed by women, will screen 61 films
from around the world at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, 341
Delaware Avenue, between Friday, August 7th and Tuesday, August 11th.
Twenty-five of the films selected by co-founders Tamar Lamberson and
her daughter Kaelin were directed by Western New York artists.
According to Tamar, this marks an increase since the festival launched
in 2023:
“It’s gratifying to see so many local women make their first film, or
collaborate with each other, or just support each other, which is what
VIFF is all about.”
Many of those local films will have their world premiere at VIFF,
including Cosmos, a lesbian-themed rom-com directed by Gabrielle
Nunzio and Marissa Graves; My Long Covid Story, a surreal documentary
by Sabrina Peña Young; and Babysitting the Demons on Maple Street, a
horror film by Amanda R. Woomer, to name a few.
VIFF screens short films and features, narrative films and
documentaries, comedies and dramas, student films and animation. This
year’s selections include a high number of shorts from Puerto Rico.
Filmmaker Q&As will follow many screenings, with filmmakers from
across the country traveling to Buffalo to discuss their work.
Four feature films will screen at the festival: Yaps (1:00 pm Sunday),
a US documentary about the challenges faced by opera singers today,
directed by Miriam Gordon-Stewart; Jameela ( 6:00 pm Sunday), a drama
from Pakistan about a transgender woman, directed by Zainab Malik and
Mina Isabella JafriMalaik; Nastell (8:00 pm Monday), a Western New
York student film about young people contending with the drug culture,
directed by Cydney Jade Ramos; and Turn Up the Night (8:00pm Tuesday),
a Western New York drama about a rock band, directed by Melodie
Roehrig, who co-stars.
VIFF will screen two blocks of films on Friday, August 7th, Monday,
August 10th and Tuesday, August 11th; four blocks on Saturday, August
8th; and three blocks on Sunday, August 9th (plus an awards
