WBBZ TV | Buffalo's Buzz shared Jeffrey Roberts's photo.

Our WBBZ-TV friend Jeffrey Roberts says the Saturday night double feature on Your Hometown Television Station is going to be great! It starts with Svengoolie at 10pm, followed by Off Beat Cinema at Midnight!

Facebook Picture
Timeline Photos

This week on Svengoolie! Gloria Holden ain't beholden to waxy dad Bela Lugosi in the 1936 sequel DRACULA'S DAUGHTER. Bela's not actually there (portrayed by ever thrifty Universal as a wax dummy), but Edward Van Sloan's great Van Helsing is still squinting through his heavy spectacles, making things difficult for Gloria and her glum cohort Irving Pichel.

Much like DRACULA, DRACULA'S DAUGHTER is at its best early on with a superbly haunting sequence: beautifully mounted and scored, performed by Holden and Pichel to perfection as Contessa Zeleska exorcises her famous Dad ("In the name of the oh holiest and through this cross be the evil spirit cast out until the end of time!" ) while her aide-de-camp Sandor looks on, sadly reading the futile nature of it all .

If the rest of D'S D doesn't match the poetry of this early bit (again, not unlike its predecessor DRACULA, which was at its best in the first reel), there's still a lot to enjoy. The film sports the most purely sensual sequence in the Universal horror canon, as Gloria quietly seduces lovely Nan Grey in a surprisingly tart moment of which Ingrid Pitt would have approved. Nan would later help adjust Vincent Price's bandages in another universal sequel, THE INVISIBLE MAN RETURNS (1940). Veteran director Lambert Hillyer did work with the real Lugosi in the excellent and unusual 30s sci-fi/horror mash-up THE INVISIBLE RAY, also in 1936.

Followed in select markets by the redoubtable Off Beat Cinema, this week featuring French comedy giant Jacques Tati's MR. HULOT'S HOLIDAY, a film which only seems to get sweeter and funnier with time. Tati never got around to making MR. HULOT MEETS FRANKENSTEIN, alas, but I bet it would have been a hoot.

Today, at the Newton-Abbott Fire House, I joined many local volunteer firefighters, Fireman's Association of the State of New York President Jim Burns, Erie County Emergency Services Commissioner Daniel Neaverth Jr. and Deputy Fire Coordinator Tiger Schmittendorf to announce this year's "RecruitNY" volunteer firefighter recruitment drive. This year's recruitment drive will kick-off with an "open-house" at many local firehouses on April 26 and 27. If you ever considered joining the fire service next weekend is the time to talk to volunteer firefighters in their houses to find out more about the service. — with Tiger Schmittendorf and 2 others.
